Known for:  Genre, interior, figural
Johannes Weiland was born in Vlaardingen, Holland.  He was a versatile artist who painted scenes of boats, still lives, flowers, and even dolls.  However, he is particularly known for genre scenes with figures, often mothers and their children, who are portrayed with unsentimental yet sensitive skill and understanding. His figures are often situated in domestic interiors, dim, humble, and unobtrusive, which provide a quietly dramatic background for the often intense and almost palpable connection between his subjects.  The titles of his works (“The Tender Mother,” “Fisherwomen at Schevingen,” “Interior of a Dutch Farmhouse,” “The Knitting Lesson,” “The Blessing,”3950.00
