Robert Pilot (b. Nfld,1898-1967) MBE, RCA, was a Canadian painter and etcher. As a child, Pilot assisted his step father landscape painter Maurice Cullen in his Montreal studio, and the two would take sketching trips together. Pilot is known for his Impressionist inspired landscapes of the Lower St. Lawrence region, and the shores of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Pilot is also widely recognized for his paintings of the snow-covered Rockies. He exhibited with the Group of Seven in 1920 but did not formalize their relationship. He studied in Paris at the Académie Julian (1920-22) where he exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1922 before returning to Montréal to work with William Brymner, and Cullen. He was elected associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1925. During WWII as a Captain in the Black Watch and made Member OBE. He was president of the RCA,1952-54. His work is held in major Canadian museum collections.
